Today I wondered what our neighbors and others might think of us. I was walking out the door to go to the YMCA and carrying Taj like a football under my arms while he held on tight to his polar bear...by his mouth. He was happy, I was happy, but I realize that that is not how you transport your son normally. And that is also not normally how one holds his favorite stuffed animal.
We've had many of these moments lately. Moments that don't seem exactly "normal", but are moments in which really, I swear, I do have everything under control. Like for instance when Taj ate a whole tomato in the grocery store. Or the time this week when during church announcements, Taj is running laps yelling because he wants to be chased by me and has become extremely comfortable with everyone at church to leave our small group of 3 chairs in the back. (maybe not the most in control, but one scoop up like a football and we are down the hall in the nursery) Yesterday, he was running around my OB's office and while making another appointment, he was down the hall and took a right, left and another right into my NP's personal office. Or today, after grocery shopping when I rip off part of a loaf of bread in the store and give to Taj. He looks like something out of a British film set in the 1900's...pleased to be given a large piece of bread for lunch. We really aren't that poor that we don't feed him well and often...he just loves eating LARGE pieces of bread torn from a baguette.
These are a few small examples of our life that aren't "normal" but are fun. What I love about Missoula is that here, people see my kid run up and down aisle at the grocery store, me yelling for him to walk slow and they just smile and laugh. No one has ever given me a dirty look like, "Why is your child not behaving or under control?" Instead I've had people slow him down so I can catch up or laugh and say how cute he is. Here it's nice that a kid can be a kid in public, and that being "normal" isn't all that important.
